Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201170172
Event: 12/03/1996
Employee injured when framed wall falls on him

At approximately 12:30 p.m. on December 3, 1996, Employee #1, a crew foreman with I.M. Construction, Inc., was working at a residential construction project. He was directing an eight-man crew as it raised a newly-framed wall section. The wall section was 20 ft 4 in. high by 13 ft wide, and constructed of 2 by 6 boards, with several large 6 by 12 headers near its top. The wall weighed over 1,300 lb, and 70 percent of its weight was concentrated at heights above 8 ft. The framing crew had manually raised the wall approximately 7 ft when they realized they would not be able to put it in position. One of the crew let go to get some braces for it. Without the coworker's help, the rest of the crew could not support the wall and it fell to the ground. Employee #1 had been helping to lift from inside the wall, and attempted to dodge the wall as it came down by ducking into a window opening. He was unable to do so in time, and the wall landed on top of him. Employee #1 sustained chest injuries, broken ribs, and an injured left knee. He was treated by paramedics and taken by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
