Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170618540
Event: 06/06/1998
Employee injured when struck by trailer hitch

At approximately 11:15 a.m. on June 6, 1998, Employee #1, of T & P Farms, finished digging irrigation ditches on tomato fields using a D8 Cat towing a large irrigation trench digger. He used the hydraulic lifting system to raise the plow blade off the ground between the support wheels, and then drove the unit to a storage area. Employee #1 proceeded to disconnect the digger from the back of the tractor without lowering the plow blade. He pulled the disconnect pin while straddling the trailer hitch, causing the blade to drop down in the back and the tongue to move up between his legs. It struck Employee #1, fracturing his wrist and knee and inflicting head injuries. He was transported by the farm foreman to Woodland Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
