Investigation Summary
Employee #1 worked as an off bearer. Employee #1 stood at the off feed side of the head rig as it cut logs into lumber. The employer operated a sawmill. Employee #1 helped control the pieces coming off the head rig and kept them on the conveyor system. A cant hook hung up on the head rig carriage after being cut. The head rig operator did not notice the cant was still caught on the end of the carriage. As the carriage was run to load another log it carried the cant back toward Employee #1. Employee #1 was not able to clear the area and was caught between the cant and metal guard covering a roller shaft. Employee #1's leg was fractured and nearly amputated. He was hospitalized.
