Employee amputates two finger tips when caught in valve

At approximately 2:15 p.m. on October 12th, 2002, Employee #1 was working at Bronco Winery in Ceres, California adjusting the plunger handle of a valve used to transport wine into a food tanker truck. The valve is known as a "milk valve" in the food industry. Employee #1 had set up a transfer hose from a pump to the valve assembly and turned on a pump to transfer the wine. Due to a significant leak in an undiscovered part of the valve assembly, Employee #1 contacted an open/close plunger on the valve. At that instant, the valve's plunger handle slammed forward to the valve housing and crushing the tips on two of his fingers. Employee #1 suffered an avulsion of the tip of the left index finger and soft tissue injury to the distal left third finger. Employee #1 was hospitalized at Memorial Hospital in Modesto California, where he was treated for his injuries.
