Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170871818
Event: 01/12/2002
Employee's finger amputated by saw blade

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on January 12, 2002, an employee was climbing a ladder to cut the top of a column. The employee, a carpenter foreman, was carrying a saw in his left hand. When he got to the top of the ladder, he raised the saw in a swinging motion to cut the column. As he did, the saw started since his finger was on the trigger. As the saw came up, it struck his right index finger which went under the front of the guard. At the time, the guard was down. The saw cut through the bone, but did not severe the tendons or nerves. He was taken to U.C Davis Medical Center and his finger was sewn back on.
