Employee's leg crushed by belt spool in personnel cage

Employee #1 and two coworkers were changing a conveyor belt on the third deck in the processing area. They installed the new belt on the personnel safety cage and raised it to the proper level. The old and new belts were joined together and the crew began to free wheel on the personnel cage. Employee #1 was told to stop the new belt from unrolling and he jumped into the personnel cage. The pipe set-up holding the spool came loose and pinned him against the back of the cage, crushing his left leg. Coworkers pulled the roll off of Employee #1 and provided assistance until an ambulance arrived.
