Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170872592
Event: 11/10/1998
Employee burned when gas vapors ignite while cutting rebar

Employee #1 was using a gas-powered saw to cut excess rebar from a new window so a steel frame could be installed. He had cut three of the five rebar without any problems. Employee #1 was cutting the fourth when the gas cap vibrated loose and started leaking. Gasoline spilled on Employee #1's legs and crotch, and the cutting produced sparks that ignited the gasoline vapors. He sustained burns on his legs and lower torso that required hospitalization. The cap on the saw did not have to be removed to check the gas level because the tank was transparent.
