Employee's thumb is smashed between aerial lift and pipe

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on March 16, 2000, Employee #1 and another worker were in an aerial lift approximately 40 ft above the floor. They were replacing a pipe that was approximately 4-in. in diameter, 10-in. in length and weighing approximately 150 pounds. They positioned the pipe on the aerial lift and used it to lower the pipe to the floor. As they neared the floor, the lift jerked causing the pipe to move. Employee #1 attempted to catch the pipe, and his right hand thumb was smashed between the rails of the lift and the pipe. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
