Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170866404
Event: 04/20/2001
Employee injured when hit by press and pinned against table

At 3:30 p.m. on April 20, 2001, Employee #1 was removing a buffalo press, an iron working machine, and preparing it for shipment to another Imperial Sugar Company, Holly Sugar Company, located in Torrington, Wyoming. Employee #1, a maintenance supervisor, was cutting the base bolts that were sunk and permanently secured in a concrete block. He had cut two bolts and then the third bolt when an employee yelled at him from across the room to "lookout". Employee #1 stood up and was hit by the buffalo press in his mid and lower body and pinned against a steel table that was behind him. The buffalo press rolled to his right, off of his waist and Employee #1 fell to his left onto the floor. He was taken to Woodland Hospital by ambulance. Employee #1 was hospitalized for over 24 hours and his injuries included a broken pelvis and muscle damage to his leg and hip.
