Employee amputates finger in compactor

On December 26, 2000, Employee #1 was operating a side loading garbage truck and collecting garbage and recyclables. After picking up a can of garbage and a plastic bag of garbage to deposit into the vehicle, he slipped and fell toward the truck as he stepped off the sidewalk. He dropped the items in his hand and reached out to stop his fall. As he did so, his left hand landed on the edge of the compactor compartment and his right hand accidentally hit the start button of the compactor. The compactor ram came down upon his left hand crushing a finger between the ram and the side of the compactor. The impact upon his hand startled him and caused him to pull his hand free from the squeeze point. As he pulled his hand free, he suffered fractures and lacerations to his finger that tore ligaments and tendons in his finger. He was hospitalized to repair the damage to the finger, but severe infection caused the doctors to amputate the finger and prevent septicemia.
