Event: 05/25/2001
Employee injured when hand caught in concrete mixer

At 1:30 p.m. on May 25, 2001, Employee #1 of Pools by Jay was seriously injured while working at a pool site in Sutter, California. The accident happened while placing ceramic tiles about a new pool. The mortar being used to set the tiles was being mixed in a portable mixer. While setting the last few tiles, there was very little mortar left, and Employee #1, in an attempt to get the last little bit of mortar from the mixer, reached into the moving mixer and tried to skim the remaining mortar from the mixing blades. Employee #1's gloved hand was pinched between the mixing blade and side of the mixer. His finger was amputated when he yanked his hand from the mixer. Employee #1 was taken to the local hospital and then transferred to Ralph K. Davies Hospital in San Francisco, California, for the attempted reattachment of a finger amputated in the accident.
