Event: 02/24/2004
Employee amputates three fingertips when load falls

At about 9:50 a.m. on February 24, 2004, Employee #1, the parts manager of Elk Grove Honda, was working in the Shipping and Receiving Department in Elk Grove, California. Employee #1 and a coworker, the service manager, were attempting to move a new tool box to the Service Department area. The box weighed about 250 lbs and Employee #1 and the coworker were loading it onto a hand truck. While tilting the load backwards to balance it, they went too far and the hand truck with the load went over backwards. Employee #1 did not remove his hand from the handle quickly enough when it fell to the ground, pinching his fingertips off. The first aid was provided by the local fire department paramedic, before Employee #1 was transported to University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. Employee #1 was hospitalized and treated for the amputation of his three fingertips on his left hand.
