Investigation Summary
At approximately 4:00 p.m. on March 3, 2004, an employee was operating a hydraulic log splitter; he was splitting rounds of redwood. While holding the activation lever with one hand and the round with the other, the round started to roll off the splitter support frame. He grabbed the end of the round with his free hand to keep it in position. As the splitting ram closed, the employee's finger was caught against the splitting wedge, amputating the finger at the second joint. He didn't release the activation lever until after the finger was amputated. First aid was provided by the local fire department paramedics; he was transported and treated for an amputated of left index finger at Mercy San Juan Hospital. He was not hospitalized.
