Employee Injured When Metal Object Strikes in Eye

On February 19, 2003, Employee #1, a driller employed by Geopier Foundation Company, completed drilling a hole and was going to remove and replace the two outside teeth on the excavator-mounted auger. He raised the auger approximately 3 ft above the ground and removed both teeth. He successfully replaced the first tooth and, when he was securing the second tooth with a sledgehammer, he was struck in the left eye by a metal fragment from the tooth. Employee #1 was initially transported to Sutter Davis Hospital by another employee and later sent to U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. Employee #1 underwent eye surgery to repair damage.
