Employee dies from blood loss after gun accidentally fires

On July 30, 1999, Employee #1, who worked on an almond and prune farm, was using a tractor to spread fertilizer from a trailer when he apparently hit a depression in the ground. A shotgun that he had been using to scare crows while on foot slipped off the running board and against the fender. The gun became caught by the tractor's right rear tire, which broke it in half and caused it to fire at point blank range into the back of Employee #1's right leg, near the knee. He dismounted and attempted to walk or crawl toward a nearby road, but was found lying in an almond orchard. Employee #1 died from a loss of blood. The tractor was found in neutral, with the engine running.
