Employee's thumb amputated in chain and sprocket drive

On July 9, 1998, Employee #1, whose company processes fruit for resale, was checking an Ashlock prune pitter for a bent shaft or for a loose sprocket on the shaft. He was turning around to lockout the machine when his gloved left hand became caught in the nip point of the chain and sprocket drive, amputating the tip of his thumb.
