Investigation Summary
At 10:10 p.m. on February 9, 1997, Employee #1, a forklift operator and lumber hauler for a sawmill, was preparing to open the door on old dry kiln #2. He was walking in front of the door when he stepped into an approximately 15 in. deep open trench of scalding hot water. He suffered serious burns to his lower right leg, including the ankle and portions of his foot. He telephoned his off-duty supervisor, who arrived within ten minutes and transported him to the emergency room at Lassen Hospital. Employee #1 was treated for his burns and held for 8 to 9 hours for observation. He was released at 8:00 a.m. on February 10, 1997, and returned to work that evening on restricted duty.
