ELECTRIC SHOCK & BURN - DIRECT CONTACT WITH ENERGIZED PARTS

Two employees working for a transformer maintenance firm were taking oil samples at a college. The employees were not using rubber insulating gloves or blankets. They approached a transformer at a football stadium and removed its front cover to gain access to the oil plug. They could not remove the plug, so one of the employees started removing a section of the top cover. As he was removing a wing nut near the 4160-volt transformer terminals, he contacted energized parts and received an electric shock. He also sustained burns on his left elbow and knuckles. He was hospitalized for his injuries.
