Investigation Summary

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on July 2, 1999, Employee #1 had a concussion and Employee #2 had a laceration to his leg and thigh when a cable broke and struck both employees. Employee #1 was 37 years old and Employee #2 was 32 years old. Both employees were employed by California Trenchless Incorporated, located in Oakland, California. The job site was located in Hayward, California. Apparently, the cable broke when it jammed against an unknown object during a pipe bursting operation. The employees were using steel cable to pull a smaller pipe through a larger one, instead of using an open-cut pipe in the trench. When the cable broke, the cable struck Employee #1 across his hard hat, knocking him unconscious. The cable struck also Employee #2 severely lacerating has left leg and thigh. Both employees were removed from the jobsite and transported to Eden Medical Center for treatment.
