Two Fingers Amputated While Operating An Unguarded Table Saw

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on April 30, 1999, Employee #1, a foreman of a residential kitchen remodeling project, lost two fingers on his left hand while operating an unguarded table saw. He was installing the final crown molding trim boards above the kitchen cabinets. He cut two 1-foot by 8-foot sub-crown fill boards for the top of the kitchen cabinets. The miter joint was open in the front. He took one of the two trim boards back to the Dewalt table saw to re-cut the miter. With the factory saw guard removed, he held the board free-handed and tried to increase the miter angle by making a concave cut on the back of the miter with the back of the saw blade. He held the board off the table by hand and passed the board across the back of the blade. The saw blade caught the board and pulled his left hand into the unguarded blade. Two fingers on his left hand were amputated, and his baby finger was deeply cut. He went to a local hospital for treatments.
