Employee's finger amputated while trying to move a barrel

On October 2, 2002, Employee #1, of Beaulieu Vineyards, was moving 60- gallon wood wine barrel by hand from a hip high rack in the barrel storage cellar to the work floor. He struck the barrel against a metal part of the rack while his fingers were in between the two surfaces. The employee crushed the tip of his left ring finger and lost half of the bone in first joint. Employee #1 was hospitalized, where he was treated for amputation.
