Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 125487470
Event: 11/03/1997
Employee injured when crushed by collapsed wall

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on November 3, 1997, Employee #1, president of Ren Lei Construction Co., Inc., and five crew members were constructing rough framing on two adjacent three-story-plus wooden penthouse buildings in San Francisco. They were erecting two approximately 30 ft sections of property line wall east of the structure. The walls were lifted using two pairs of wall jacks and needed only minor adjustments before being fixed in place. While Employee #1 was examining the joint fitness of the adjacent building, the wall collapsed on him. He sustained serious injuries, for which he was hospitalized. The temporary 2 by 4 bracings had not been installed, and the wall jacks did not provide adequate holding power when the walls were upright.
