Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 787887
Event: 11/11/1993
Employee dies when struck by tree

Employee #1 was employed as a timber faller for S. Reid Log. There were no witnesses to this accident, as his partner was located up the hill and out of sight. It appears that Employee #1 had faced and backed up two small trees, and had left them standing hung up. There were no signs of wedges being used on either tree. It appears that after Employee #1 could not get the two trees down he dropped back and felled a small maple (push) tree toward the two trees, without any success in knocking them down. Then he fell another maple, which was to be felled 90 degrees from the two standing trees. As he finished felling this maple, the smaller of the two standing trees came over backwards and struck Employee #1 on the head, causing fatal injuries.
