Employee bypasses guard to clear jam, fingers crushed

Employee #1 was operating a strikeout machine that squeezes dyed cloth. Because the cloth was not feeding between the rollers correctly, Employee #1 stuck scissors behind the guard opening. The scissors and his hand were pulled into the rollers' nip point, crushing his fingers. The machine has 5 1/2 in. diameter rollers that measure 23 1/2 in. long and run at 21 rpm/9.2 yards per minute. A foot pedal activated an angle iron guard that covered the rollers' nip point. An emergency button was added to the machine after the accident because the emergency stop wire across the front of machine was an inadequate guard.
