Employee's right hand crushed in forklift mast

At 10:30 a.m. on October 27, 1992, Employee #1, of Yahnian Farms, had completed the removal of elevated conveyor belts for end-of-season storage preparation. He was riding in a fruit bin (approximately 48 inches by 48 inches by 24 inches high) that was being used as a forklift elevated work platform. The forklift operator (with Employee #1 riding in the bin platform) moved the elevated platform (approximately 12 inches) approximately 100 yards across the yard to a point behind the office building where the belts were to be transferred onto a pallet and placed in storage. As the forklift moved from the east end of the yard to a grassy area, it bounced over a bump, causing Employee #1 to place his right hand on the cross member of the forklift mast to balance himself. As the operator moved forward, lowering the platform to the ground, Employee #1's right hand was caught by a cross member from the inner mast coming down and was crushed. He was transported to Koweal Delta District Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
