Investigation Summary
TWO POWER LINE WORKERS WERE AT A UTILITY POLE, WORKING ON A 7200-VOLT OVERHEAD POWER LINE THAT THEY THOUGHT WAS DEENERGIZED. THEY HAD ISOLATED THE LINE AT A TRANSFORMER AT THE PREVIOUS POLE. THE POWER LINE RAN NORTH AND SOUTH AND WENT OVER A HILL FURTHER TO THE WEST. THE LINE APPEARED TO DEAD END AT AN OLD TRAILER. HOWEVER, THE LINE LOOPED BACK TO THE MAIN LINE 0.25 MILE AWAY. THUS, THE POWER LINE WAS STILL ENERGIZED. ONE OF THE EMPLOYEES WAS WORKING FROM AN AERIAL LIFT, INSTALLING NEW CONDUCTORS. THE OTHER WAS ON THE POLE, REMOVING HARDWARE. THE CONDUCTOR AT THE TOP OF THE POLE WAS CUT, AND IT FELL ONTO THE EMPLOYEE ON THE POLE. HE RECEIVED AN ELECTRIC SHOCK AND SUSTAINED BURNS TO HIS HAND AND SIDE. HE WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR HIS INJURIES.
