Investigation Summary
Employees of Foster Farms noticed a chlorine odor in the water chiller area and evacuated the plant. Employees working near the 20 ft by 50 ft by 3 ft water chiller were exposed to chlorine gas in an unknown concentration. A feed valve of the chlorine system malfunctioned, releasing a higher than normal amount of chlorine gas into the chilled water. Water concentration levels went from a 25-to-28 ppm range to 35 ppm, according to the plant engineer. No employees were admitted to the hospital, but all were given the option to undergo a medical exam. Nine of the plant's 300 employees were taken to emergency rooms. They were released.
