Investigation Summary
On July 31, 2007, Employee #1 was picking up scrap lumber at the worksite, 10 ft away from a coworker who was framing a wall. The coworker was nailing 2-by-4 studs with a nail gun, firing 16-penny nails, when one of the nails hit a knot. The stud split as soon as the nail hit it and the nail sailed through the board and shot out approximately 10 ft, striking Employee #1 in the face. The coworker later stated that he was firing downward through the top plate onto the end of a vertical stud when the nail hit the knot and changed direction as it split the board.
