Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170380844
Event: 03/07/1996
Employee's hand punctured when chipping gun activates

Employee #1 was working at the construction site of a bridge overpass that was undergoing seismic retrofitting. He was holding a chipping gun against his thigh while trying to install a new 12 in. long bit. Employee #1 was keeping the sharp-pointed bit in place by pressing his left hand against the bit's pointed end while locking the retaining spring with his right hand. The pressure of his left hand on the bit and the torque exerted by his right hand caused the chipping gun to rotate. The pneumatic trigger was depressed against Employee #1's thigh, activating the gun. The point of the bit was driven through his leather glove and into his hand between his middle and index fingers. Employee #1 later admitted that he had been in too great a hurry to change the bit.
