Employee catches finger in pinch point while holding log

Workers were in the process of splitting logs. Employee #1 was placing logs on the carriage. He would hold the logs in place until the splitting head came in contact with the wood. Employee #1 had his index finger over the end of the log when the ram moved the splitter head against the log, pushing the log against the backing plate. Employee #1's hand and finger were caught between the log and the plate. The end of his finger was mashed and was amputated in the hospital. Employee #1 was not paying attention to the placement of his hand.
