Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201063856
Event: 06/07/2001
Small Finger Amputated using Circular Saw

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on June 7, 2001, a carpenter amputated a finger on his left hand while using a 7.25-in., worm-driven Skilsaw circular saw (Model No. HD77). He was transported to a hospital by a coworker, where the finger was surgically reattached. He was released the next day. According to the employer, the injured employee was using a circular saw on a table to make a rip cut along a piece of 2 by 4 lumber. His left hand was holding the lumber with fingers underneath, when the blade passed over his fingers and cut the small finger of his left hand at the first joint. It was hanging by a small part of flesh. The employee had 2.5 months experience. No defects were found in the equipment. The event was not witnessed. The employer failed to provide proper training in the hazards of holding a piece of lumber with fingers near a moving saw blade.
