Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 120273628
Event: 11/03/1998
ELECTRIC SHOCK - CONTACT WITH OVERHEAD LINE THRU AERIAL LIFT

An apprentice power line worker was clipping in a new overhead power line conductor onto a utility pole. He was working from an aerial lift (a 1994 International truck equipped with a Lift-All aerial device). He elevated the aerial lift about 6 meters above the ground, close to the existing 12-kilovolt power line to which the new conductor was to be connected. The mounting bracket on the aerial lift bucket contacted the existing power line, which had not been covered with electrical protective equipment. The employee received an electric shock and sustained third-degree burns to his right arm and hand. He was hospitalized for his injuries. The injured employee was being trained as a journeyman power line worker.
