Employee injures fingers while moving fan

On September 6, 1994, Employee #1, of PC/M Group, Inc., a subcontractor to Del Webb California, a drywall contractor, was preparing to texture the walls in a sales pavilion. Employee #1 was using a portable pedestal-mounted 20 in. fan to help dry the wall surfaces while he applied a layer of taping compound. He attempted to move the fan without first turning it off. The fan head assembly (motor, fan, and guard), which was not tightly secured, pivoted down onto his hand. Employee #1 reacted by pulling his hand off the pedestal pole and into the back of the fan. Although the front of the fan was properly guarded, the guarding of the fan blades at the back was substandard, with large open grid work. Employee #1's hand went through the guard and into the blades. His left index finger was amputated and the middle finger was severely lacerated. First aid was applied and he was transported to Roseville General Hospital in Roseville, CA, where he was hospitalized for treatment.
