Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170622393
Event: 06/09/1994
Employee injured in trench cave-in

At about 1:00 p.m. on June 9, 1994, Employee #1 was at a site in Rocklin, CA, installing a water line connection for the Placer County Water Agency. He was in a 5 ft 6 in. L-shaped excavation without shoring or other protective system. Shoring had been tried the day before but was the wrong width for the excavation. The corner area of the excavation collapsed, striking Employee #1 in the lower legs and driving him into the side wall. Emergency first aid was provided and Employee #1 was transported by ambulance to Roseville General Hospital in Roseville, CA. He was treated for a broken and dislocated left wrist and arm, a broken collarbone, and a strained back (hairline fracture).
