Investigation Summary
On October 2, 2010, Employee #1 was cleaning grape press in a winery. He was a contract worker for an employer that provided businesses with temporary labor service. The grape press was used to extract grape juice from whole grapes. Employee #1 removed the drain plug from one end of the machines auger conveyer. No liquid came out, so Employee #1 stuck one of his fingers on his left hand into the hole to assist in opening the drain. The machine was not deenergized and the blade of the auger came in contact with his left index finger, severing its fingertip. Employee #1 was taken to the Fresno Community Hospital, in Fresno, California, where he was treated and released.
