Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 361674393
Event: 04/06/1996
ELECTRIC SHOCK - DIRECT CONTACT WITH ENERGIZED CONDUCTOR

An apprentice electrician was working atop a 12.6-kilovolt (7.2-kilovolt-to-ground) three-phase switchgear that was 2.7 meters high. He was working near the service entry point, attempting to maneuver a 76-millimeter-diameter flexible metal conduct (AC-Corflex) into a knockout opening at the raceway interface with the switchgear. The supply conductors for the switchgear were energized and were 1.2 meters from the raceway. (The plant had a scheduled shutdown for a 3-hour period later that day, when the service to the switchgear could have been deenergized.) The employee contacted one of the supply phase conductors and was electrocuted.
