Event: 10/25/1994
Employee overexposed to water/alcohol mixture

Employee #1, of Porterville Citrus, Inc., loaded a portable gas-powered spray rig with a mixture of one part water to one part isopropyl alcohol. He sprayed the walls and ceiling of three storage (sweat) rooms and reloaded the spray rig. He sprayed a second set of three rooms and then took a lunch break. Employee #1 did not use the protective gloves and face shield that he had been provided. The total exposure time was two hours. Subsequent to the exposure, Employee #1 had his gall bladder removed. He also suffers from poor liver function. Air sampling conducted with a 3:1 mixture (water:alcohol) averaged 100 ppm for a one hour exposure. PPE would not have protected him from exposure.
