Employee Falls Through Guarded Stairwell, Suffers Concussion

On January 17, 2007, Employee #1 was walking on metal decking on Floor A. Employee #1 was looking for help to move a heavy welding chair. The exterior of the floor and the internal floor openings were appropriately protected. Somehow, Employee #1 fell into a protected stairwell and hit the landing midway between Floors A and B, approximately 8 ft below Floor A. Employee #1 bounced off that stairwell landing and should have ended his fall approximately 8 ft below on Floor B. Employee #1 eventually was found on the stairwell landing between Floors B and C approximately 16 ft below the stairwell landing between floors A and B. Employee #1's total fall was approximately 24 ft. Employee #1 suffered a serious concussion and did not recall the events surrounding the accident. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
