Investigation Summary
Employee #1, a feller with 30 years work experience, and coworkers at a small logging company were removing dead and dying trees from an area that had last been logged in 1953. There were numerous snags were in this area. At approximately 8:00 a.m. on September 11, 1995, Employee #1 felled a 40 ft tall, 20 in. tree into a 10 ft long snag that was 25 ft away. He had walked about 5 ft away from the felled tree when the top of the snag flew back and hit him on the head. A coworker who was working nearby went to check on him. Employee #1 was air lifted to Enloe Hospital in Chico, where he died on October 2, 1995. Employee #1 said he could not see the snag because the sun was in his eyes.
