Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201100013
Event: 03/31/1996
Employee's fingers injured in table saw

Employee #1 worked as a cabinet assembler, and in a variety of other positions, for a cabinet- making company. He was holding a 3/4 in. thick by 2 1/4 in. by 25 in. piece of oak in his hands while lining it up to cut the center of the board. He did this by setting the end of the board on the table of a 10 in. Delta table saw. He held the other end in the air above the saw blade, with the end touching the table and resting against the saw guide, and then lowered the piece of wood down onto the saw; this allowed him to make a cut in the center of the piece of wood. His first cut was easily made. On the second cut, the piece of wood kicked back and the fingers on Employee #1's left hand were pulled across the saw blade. His fingers were severely lacerated and nearly amputated, but the doctor was able to save all four of them.
