Employee's hand severely lacerated when caught in machinery

On April 19, 2002, Employee #1 was in the elevator penthouse to observe elevator operation since it was starting and stopping in a jerky manner. The elevator was located in a 10-story office building in Santa Ana, California. While visually inspecting the elevator, Employee #1 reached into the braking system. His hand was pinched in the working mechanism of the elevator, between the braking system and the framework of the moving elevator. Employee #1's hand was severely lacerated. He was hospitalized.
