Employee Amputates Toes While Using Saw

On September 29, 2006, an employee was repairing a water leak in a 6-in. water main between a wall and a 5-ft wide tree. The ground was full of roots, making it difficult to reach the leaking pipe. The employee was using a gas-powered saw to cut away the roots. The saw hit something hard, causing the blade to kick back and cut through his left shoe. Two of the employee's left toes were amputated. The employee was hospitalized and treated for amputation.
