Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201060795
Event: 07/09/1997
EMPLOYEE INJURED IN FALL FROM ROOF

At 1:32 p.m. on July 9, 1997, Employee #1, a 49-year-old painter employed by a local painting contractor, sustained a back injury while engaged in a power washing operation. Employee #1 was working on the second story of a two-story house. High pressure water mixed with a cleaning solution was being used to remove dirt and grime from wood shingle siding. After completing the front and garage area, Employee #1 moved to the backside and began to knock down spider webs under the south eaves on the second floor. Employee #1 was wearing rubber soled work boots while standing on the wet roof about six feet from the edge, which was about 13 feet above the ground. Employee #1 lost his footing on the wet roof and fell to the ground. Other workers in the area came to his assistance and 911 was called. Paramedics arrived in about 10 to 12 minutes and transported the injured worker to a local hospital. The company was cited for not providing any fall protection. The job was completed using a lanyard attached to a dogline secured around the second story of the house.
