Investigation Summary
A MACHINERY MECHANIC WAS PERFORMING WARRANTY MAINTENANCE ON THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FOR A 950-TON CRANE. HE WAS WORKING ON ENERGIZED 575-VOLT CONTACTORS FOR THE CRANE. HE HAD BEEN WORKING IN THE SHEAVE SHUTTLE CABINET, APPARENTLY WITHOUT LOCKING OUT THE ELECTRIC SUPPLY FOR THE CONTROL WIRING. AS HE WAS REPLACING THE COVERS ON THE CONTROL CABINET FOR THE 575-VOLT CONTACTORS, HE TOUCHED THE EXPOSED CONNECTORS ON THE CONTACTORS. HE RECEIVED AN ELECTRIC SHOCK AND BURNS, FOR WHICH HE WAS HOSPITALIZED.
