Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170694335
Event: 12/31/1992
ELECTRIC SHOCK - CONTACT WITH OVERHEAD LINE THRU LADDER

An employee was picking oranges. He needed to change his location, so he picked up his 18-foot-long aluminum ladder and carried it in an upright position. He walked the ladder around the end of a row of trees, and the ladder contacted an overhead power line that traversed the end of the grove at a height of 19 feet, 8 inches. The employee received an electric shock and third degree burns on his right shoulder and his right foot. He was hospitalized for his injuries. The employee had received training on December 1, 1992, in the use of ladders in the field. On the day of the accident, about 2 hours before it occurred, he had also received verbal instructions and warnings about using ladders in the field.
