Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170625321
Event: 12/17/1999
Employee's fingertip lacerated in circular saw

Employee #1 and coworkers were finishing a framing job on a vehicle carport. The were installing one of the last wooden posts and trying to set a support beam when they discovered that one of the vertical posts was 1/4 in. too long. Employee #1 took his skill saw and climbed a 6 ft ladder to cut off the excess. The post was shoulder-high but he couldn't balance the saw with the handles so he grabbed the frame of the saw near the blade. Employee #1 was making the cut when he lacerated his left little finger. He was taken to the hospital where his finger was treated, but because of the nerve damage, the doctor said it would take two or three more surgeries to repair the finger. Employee #1 did not want to go through the surgeries and decided to have the doctor amputate the tip of his finger.
