Employee injured when arm pulled into cable puller

Employee #1, of Taft Electric Co., observed that the cable puller motor was laboring while it was pulling overhead feeder cables that were approximately 1,000 feet long. The tugger head on the puller had approximately 4 to 5 wraps on it, causing the motor problem. Employee #1 stood in front of the tugger head and unwrapped it to relieve the pressure on the motor. He had unwrapped approximately two wraps, using his left hand, when the rope unraveled rapidly, taking his left arm into the tugger head and pulling him through. Employee #1 landed approximately 6 to 10 feet away from the cable puller. Employee #1 was hospitalized with a left wrist fracture and damage to his left bicep.
