Investigation Summary
A handyman with 45 to 50 years of experience performing mechanical and electrical work was installing electric equipment in a bathroom being remodeled. He had installed wiring from a 120-volt wall switch to a new wall-mounted box that was to hold a lighting fixture. The circuit he was working on was energized, but the employee thought the circuit was deenergized with the switch in the off position. (It was actually in the on position.) The two circuit conductors and the equipment grounding conductor were sticking out of the wall, and the ceiling was open. The employee stood on a cabinet, about a meter off the floor, leaned in toward the exposed conductors, reached into the attic, and touched a grounded cable. He received an electric shock, as the conductors were in contact with his chest. The employee's breathing was impaired, and he took rest of day off.
