Employee injures back in fall from ballroom stage

At about 6:40 p.m. on September 27, 1994, Employee #1, who had been a banquet bus person for the Westin St. Francis Hotel for a number of years, was placing aprons on a table on the stage inside the grand ballroom. Apparently, some parts of the stage platform had moved or separated. Employee #1 stepped backward and fell, striking his back against the edge of the platform (a riser). He suffered a cracked vertebra, a broken rib, and damage to his left shoulder. The security officer called 911. San Francisco Paramedic Unit #89 responded and took Employee #1 to California Pacific Medical Center's emergency room. The stage was 41 1/2 inches from ground level and had no guardrail. T8CCR 3210(a) states that a guardrail shall be provided on all open sides of unenclosed platforms where the working level is more than 30 inches above the floor, and the employer was cited accordingly.
