Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170161194
Event: 02/24/1993
Employee hospitalized after fall from scaffolding

At about 11:27 a.m. on February 15, 1993, Employee #1, a plasterer for Jerry Johnson Stucco, was applying stucco to a new two-story house at a residential construction site. A plank on which he had been standing broke and he fell about 14 ft between the scaffolding and the wall. Employee #1 struck the planks on the lower level of the scaffolding feet first and was catapulted off the scaffolding to the ground. Other workers on the site heard him fall and came to his aid. 911 was called and paramedics transported Employee #1 to a local hospital. Employee #1 had injured his right foot and suffered two hairline fractures of his vertebrae. The standard 2 by 10 by 12 ft plank was inspected and found to have broken near mid-span. No knots or other defects were visible. The break was clean with no evidence of prior stress fractures, cuts, or compression.
